Historical background

ANTONIUS and OCTAVIA

(39-32 BC)

Octavie is Octave's sister. She marries Marcellus, consul in 50 BC. -VS. who died in 40 BC. -VS. It was at this precise moment that Octave reconciled with Marc Antoine at Brindisium. One of the clauses of the treaty provides for the marriage of Octave's sister to Marc Antoine. Marc Antoine married Octavie in 39 or 38 BC. -VS. He spends the following years in the East and already has a guilty relationship with Cleopatra. After the interview at Athens in 37 BC. -VS. , it is still Octavie who reconciles her brother and her husband, and negotiates the peace of Taranto. Shortly after, Marc Antoine abandons his wife and goes to find Cleopatra in Egypt, whom he ends up marrying and who gives him several children.. Finally, Antony decides to repudiate Octavia in 32 BC.. -VS. , to Octave's annoyance. After the publication of Antoine's will, conflict became inevitable.. The clash takes place at Actium on September 2, 31 BC. -VS. The following year, Marc Antoine and Cleopatra committed suicide.. Octave has Caesarion put to death, but Octavie manages to save the children of Antony and Cleopatra, including the future Cleopatra Selene, wife of Juba II. Very pious, Octavie died in 11 BC. -VS.
