Exemplaire de qualité exceptionnelle pour ce type monétaire sur un flan un peu court sur la légende de droit. Magnifique tête nue d’Antonin le Pieux au début du règne. Revers finement détaillé. Merveilleuse patine vert foncé. Conserve une partie de son brillant de frappe et de son coupant d’origine

Reverse description : Abundantia ou Annona (l’Abondance ou l’Annone) debout à gauche, tenant des épis de la main droite et une corne d’abondance de la main gauche entre un modius rempli d’épis et une poupe de navire.
Reverse translation : “Pontifex Maximus Tribunicia Potestate Consul iterum”, (Grand pontife revêtu de la puissance tribunitienne consul père de la patrie).

Commentary


C’est la première fois que nous proposons ce type à la vente qui semble plus rare que ne le laissent supposer les ouvrages généraux. Cet exemplaire est cité dans l’inventaire de J. Lacourt (Sb1, p. 107).

Augustus

Antonin was born on September 19, 86 in Lanuvium. His family is from Gaul (Nîmes). He was a wealthy senator who married Faustina the Elder between 110 and 115 and thus entered Hadrian's family by marriage. After the death of Aelius on January 1, 138, Hadrian chose Antonin to succeed him on February 25, 138, adding two adopted sons, Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. Hadrian dies on July 10 and Antonin succeeds him. He must first fight to deify Hadrian, enemy of the Senate. In 139, Marc Aurèle becomes Caesar and Faustina Augusta. His reign is calm and happy and symbolizes the "Pax Romana" of the second century. In 148, he commemorated with pomp the 900th anniversary of Rome.
