Commentary

With this reverse, we have two varieties of naked bust with or without drapery on the left shoulder. On this example, the drapery is visible on each side of the neck. Depending on the example, the representation of the funeral pyre (rogus) is slightly different, but always with four levels, the first of which is decorated and serves as a base, the second with openings

Historical background

DIVUS ANTONINUS PIUS

(+7/03/161)

Consecration of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus

Antonin was born in 86. He already fell very ill in 144 and nearly died. From 160, the Emperor is continually bedridden. At the beginning of the year 161, Antonin no longer gets up and dies on March 7, 161. He is immediately deified by Marcus Aurelius and buried in the Mausoleum of Hadrian, the current Castel Sant'Angelo. The crematorium "Ustrinum Antonini Pii" seems to be the one that was already used for the cremation of Faustina the Elder in 141. It is located in Regio IX of the Circus Maximus, west of the Corso, near the current Piazza Montecitorio.
