Historical background

ANNIA FAUSTINA

(221 A.D.

Elagabal's third wife

Annia Faustina, a descendant of the Antonine family (Marc Aurelius) married Elagabalus in 221. Julia Maesa, the emperor's grandmother, had pushed for the dissolution of her grandson's marriage with the vestal Aquilia Severa. She made him marry this daughter of the Roman aristocracy. The marriage lasted a short time. Elagabalus repudiated this third wife and remarried Aquilia Severa, his second wife who thus became his fourth companion, for a man under the age of eighteen! History does not say what happened to the repudiated augusta.
