Commentary

The Maillé family originated from Touraine and had been established in Anjou at least since the time of the Crusades. Armand-Jean de Maillé-Brézé was born in 1619 and wears a gold shield with three wavy gold bands. His father was a Marshal of France. He was also the nephew, through his mother, of Richelieu, who gave him the generalship of the galleys in 1639. He was subsequently given command of the Mediterranean fleet and then of the Western fleet, with which he won the victory of Cadiz in 1640. In 1642, he won the victory of Barcelona, which enabled the conquest of Roussillon. Upon Richelieu's death, he succeeded him as Grand Master and General Superintendent of the Seas and Trade. A peer in 1643, he again won the victories of Rosas and Cartagena. He was then in Italy where, during a battle on the Saint-Louis, his head was blown off by a cannonball.

Historical background

ANJOU - GENTRY

4712

Anjou was formed into a county in 878 for Ingelger, founder of the Angevin dynasty from which came the Plantagenets and the English kings from Henry II. In 1203, the county was confiscated but it was given by will to Charles of Anjou, brother of Saint Louis in 1246. Thereafter, the matrimonial alliances of the princes of Anjou allowed the house to reign in different places in Europe : Naples, Hungary, Tarente, etc. In 1328, Anjou was again united to the crown by Philippe VI of Valois but again became a duchy in 1360 for the second son of Jean le Bon. The last descendant of this family, King René, died in 1481 and Anjou was definitively attached to the Crown in 1482, even if the title was still carried by several princes of the blood, such as the future Philippe V of Spain..
