Historical background

ANJOU - COUNTY OF ANJOU - GEOFFREY III CALLED ""THE BEARDED"

(1060-1068)

Geoffroy III the Bearded is the son of Geoffroy II Martel and the grandson of Foulques III Nerra (987-1040), the founder of the Angevin power. Foulques IV le Réchin (1068-1109) succeeded his father, Geoffroy III le Barbu. The counts of Anjou, still powerful, had to face the rise of the Capétiens with Philippe Ier and their turbulent neighbors, in particular Thibaud III of Blois and Chartres (1037-1089/90).
