Commentary

The provenance of the medal is uncertain, however, the various elements on the reverse allow us to say that the medal is attributed to Otto Hellmuth (1896-1968), Gauleiter of Mainfranken (or Lower Franconia). The term Mainfranken was applied from 1933 when the terminology of the districts was standardized. The term Gauleiter designates a regional political leader of the NSDAP and administrative head of a Gau (territorial subdivision). Regarding the obverse, the rabbit (or hare) and the inscription NURNBERG at the bottom right are reminiscent of the hare by Albrecht Durer, watercolor and gouache made in 1502. The reason for the use of the rabbit remains unclear. We do not know the reason
