Historical background

ANGOLA - MARIA I

(1777-1816)

Marie succeeded Joseph I in 1777. Pierre III, her husband, was associated with her until 1786, the date of her death. Marie reigned until 1805, but, in fact, Prince John was regent from 1799 and remained so until 1818. Her full title was: Queen of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves, of each side of the sea in Africa, Duchess of Guinea and of the conquest, navigation and commerce of Ethiopia, Arabia, Persia and India by the grace of God. Discovered by explorer Diogo Cão at the end of the 15th century, Angola gradually became a Portuguese colony. It was only in 1975, after a terrible war of liberation, that the country became independent..
