Commentary

This coin is one of the few with two human representations from the Merovingian period. This type is commonly found in Gaul, either alone or with other Merovingian denarii, which proves a wide circulation. DM Metcalf distinguishes two groups in these coins: official coins and imitations. The finest examples are traditionally considered official and the others as imitations... This type would have been struck in all regions of the South and East of England, but especially in the South-East and in the Thames basin

Historical background

ENGLAND - ANGLO-SAXONS

(7th - 8th centuries)

If the minting of these coins is to be located at the beginning of the 8th century, in Great Britain, it is not exceptional to find them in Gaul. They are often confused with Merovingian silver coins (cf. MONNAIES XIX, n° 503, sceattas c. 680-710, classified in Merovingian denier of Laon). During the 8th century, the style of these pieces is more and more degenerated, they are often in ridge or filled. These coins disappeared from circulation in the second half of the 8th century.
