Commentary

This type uses the same obverse typology as the “Sceat with facing heads and 4 birds, Series J, type 37”, but associated with a reverse with an upturned bird. In the Oxford catalogue, DM Metcalf specified that this type was known from only a dozen examples; 4 were found in Domburg, 2 are kept in the Brussels office, one in Paris... No finds had been reported in the center or the north of England. He further specifies that the artistic quality of the dies is quite poor in comparison with other coins in Series J

Historical background

ENGLAND - ANGLO-SAXONS

(7th - 8th centuries)

If the minting of these coins is to be located at the beginning of the 8th century, in Great Britain, it is not exceptional to find them in Gaul. They are often confused with Merovingian silver coins (cf. MONNAIES XIX, n° 503, sceattas c. 680-710, classified in Merovingian denier of Laon). During the 8th century, the style of these pieces is more and more degenerated, they are often in ridge or filled. These coins disappeared from circulation in the second half of the 8th century.
