Belle petite monnaie sur un flan un peu court mais avec des types assez bien centrés et bien nets. Patine grise, avec de petites irisations et d’infimes concrétions blanches au revers

Obverse description : Tête barbare, très stylisée à droite, les cheveux hirsutes ; des petits traits parallèles devant la bouche, un globule et une sorte de V.
Reverse
Reverse legend : VICO.
Reverse description : Carré perlé, avec un annelet au centre, accosté des pseudo-lettres V, I et C (trois globules dans le champ).
Commentary
La variété dite VICO vient les ornements du carré perlé du revers ; les lettres V, I, C et O y sont interprétée. Il est à noter que cet exemplaire présente un annelet qui n’est pas pointé (en guise de O).
Cet exemplaire correspond exactement aux n° 197 et 198 d’Oxford qui sont indiqués appartenir à la sous variété 1.
T. Abramson regroupe ces monnaies sous la “Frankener variété B”, en référence à la trouvaille de 360 monnaies de ce type à Leeuwarden (GB) publiée en 1870 par J. Dirks.

(7th - 8th centuries)
If the minting of these coins is to be located at the beginning of the 8th century, in Great Britain, it is not exceptional to find them in Gaul. They are often confused with Merovingian silver coins (cf. MONNAIES XIX, n° 503, sceattas c. 680-710, classified in Merovingian denier of Laon). During the 8th century, the style of these pieces is more and more degenerated, they are often in ridge or filled. These coins disappeared from circulation in the second half of the 8th century.
