Commentary

.
The obverse of this example does not correspond to the examples of Series D type 8; the motifs in the pearl square are different and the central annulet is particularly small, a bit like on Oxford No. 188. If one wanted to interpret the legend of the obverse, from the letters contained in the pearl square, one would have to compose with the letters O, I, T, V and V (?)

Historical background

ENGLAND - ANGLO-SAXONS

(7th - 8th centuries)

If the minting of these coins is to be located at the beginning of the 8th century, in Great Britain, it is not exceptional to find them in Gaul. They are often confused with Merovingian silver coins (cf. MONNAIES XIX, n° 503, sceattas c. 680-710, classified in Merovingian denier of Laon). During the 8th century, the style of these pieces is more and more degenerated, they are often in ridge or filled. These coins disappeared from circulation in the second half of the 8th century.
