Commentary

This type of silver denarius with the runic legend (in fact pseudo legend) is inspired by the pale gold coins, or thrymsas, of the Pa series. The obverse is reinterpreted (as on the TIC denarii) and the reverse imitated by clumsily copying the runes, in a pseudo vertical legend to the right and left of the standard (or beaded ensign). This runic legend can be transcribed in ÆPA. For the reverse, some read TOTII (?) inside the standard

Historical background

ENGLAND - ANGLO-SAXONS

(7th - 8th centuries)

If the minting of these coins is to be located at the beginning of the 8th century, in Great Britain, it is not exceptional to find them in Gaul. They are often confused with Merovingian silver coins (cf. MONNAIES XIX, n° 503, sceattas c. 680-710, classified in Merovingian denier of Laon). During the 8th century, the style of these pieces is more and more degenerated, they are often in ridge or filled. These coins disappeared from circulation in the second half of the 8th century.
