Obverse description : Buste casqué, diadémé et cuirassé d'Anastase de face, tenant de la main droite la lance placée sur l'épaule et de la gauche un bouclier orné d'un cavalier bondissant à droite (N'a).
Obverse translation : “Dominus Noster Anastasius Perpetuus Augustus”, (Notre Seigneur Anastase Perpétuel Auguste).

Reverse


Reverse legend : VICTORI-A AVGGGI/ -|*//CONOB.
Reverse description : Victoire debout à gauche, tenant une longue croix chrismée inversée de la main droite ; étoile à huit rais dans le champ à gauche.
Reverse translation : “Victoria Augustorum”, (Victoire des Augustes).

Commentary


Diadème perlé. Cuirasse lignée et décorée. Bouclier orné d’un cavalier stylisé. Étoile à huit rais dans le champ à droite du revers.

After the assassination of Zeno, Anastasius married Ariadne who chose him as emperor. His long reign, 27 years, allowed to restore the imperial power. He died without an heir, but is now regarded as the founder of the Byzantine Empire.
