Obverse legend : MARIAGE - CHRETIEN.
Obverse description : Deux époux, face à face, vêtus à l’antique, prêtent serment devant un autel gothique. A droite, l’époux tient la main droite de sa promise et lève la gauche au dessus d’un livre sacré. Au centre de l’autel se tient une vierge à l’enfant. Signé au centre de l’exergue : PINGRET. F de manière plus large avec un point après le T dans l’axe du pli de la robe, plus de point après le F. Le I est à la verticale de l’ange de l’autel; le F est presque sous le double pli de la robe.

Reverse legend : AH / UNIS LE 14 AVRIL 1896.
Reverse description : Couronne de feuillages et de fleurs avec en son centre le monogramme des époux ainsi que la date de leur union : AH / UNIS LE 14 AVRIL 1896.

Historical background
LOVE AND MARRIAGE
It was customary in the past to give a treizain during the wedding mass. This treizain was blessed and signified entry into a community of property for the married couple. The treizain, which later became a medal or wedding token, was so called in honor of Jesus Christ and the twelve apostles. This practice continued until the first half of the 20th century. The reference work on the subject is the work of Jules Florange, Love and marriage in numismatics, Moulins, 1936 now replaced by that of Henri Térisse, La Numismatique du Mariage, Argenton-sur-Creuse 2008.
