Obverse description : Deux époux, face à face, vêtus à l’antique, prêtent serment devant un autel gothique. A droite, l’époux tient la main droite de sa promise et lève la gauche au dessus d’un livre sacré. Au centre de l’autel se tient une vierge à l’enfant rayonnante. Signature à l’exergue : PINGRET F..

Reverse legend : COMTE THOMAS / DE DIENHEIM BROCHOCKI / ANTOINETTE DE BENNETOT / 20 MAI / 1884.
Reverse description : Légende gravée en 5 lignes dans une couronne fermée de roses entourant le champ.
Commentary
Exemplaire attribué aux noms des époux Comte Thomas de Dienheim Brochocki (comte d’origine polonaise) et Antoinette Cotton de Bennetot, le 20 mai 1884, conservé dans un écrin (trop grand) en simili cuir rouge timbré en lettres dorées : M.R BROCHOCKI, avec feutrine bleue.
Historical background
LOVE AND MARRIAGE
It was customary in the past to give a treizain during the wedding mass. This treizain was blessed and signified entry into a community of property for the married couple. The treizain, which later became a medal or wedding token, was so called in honor of Jesus Christ and the twelve apostles. This practice continued until the first half of the 20th century. The reference work on the subject is the work of Jules Florange, Love and marriage in numismatics, Moulins, 1936 now replaced by that of Henri Térisse, La Numismatique du Mariage, Argenton-sur-Creuse 2008.
