Commentary

Medal commemorating the marriage of George, Count of Jametel, and the Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Marie and George received $200,000 from Marie's father to settle down. They lived in the Faubourg Saint-Germain in Paris. George was then accused of marrying the Duchess solely for her wealth. George had several mistresses, including the Infanta Eulalia of Spain. In 1908, Marie filed for divorce. Her husband was found guilty of continuing his affair with the Infanta Eulalia after the marriage. In August, Marie's younger brother, Duke Charles Borwin, decided to defend his sister's honor and challenged his brother-in-law to a duel. During the duel, George Jametel mortally wounded the young Duke of Mecklenburg. Marie and George divorced on December 31, 1908. Marie of Mecklenburg married a second time on August 11, 1911, with Julius Ernst of Lippe-Biesterfeld. Source: Geneanet

Historical background

LOVE AND MARRIAGE

It was customary in the past to give a treizain during the wedding mass. This treizain was blessed and signified entry into a community of property for the married couple. The treizain, which later became a medal or wedding token, was so called in honor of Jesus Christ and the twelve apostles. This practice continued until the first half of the 20th century. The reference work on the subject is the work of Jules Florange, Love and marriage in numismatics, Moulins, 1936 now replaced by that of Henri Térisse, La Numismatique du Mariage, Argenton-sur-Creuse 2008.
