Obverse description : L’époux à gauche, l’épouse à droite, vêtus à l’antique, se serrent la main devant un autel orné d’une couronne et d’un flambeau, accosté d’une houe pour l’homme et d’un quenouille garnie de fil pour la femme, signé : MONTAGNY. F. .

Reverse legend : GJ. AG / UNIS LE 11 FEVRIER / 1888.
Reverse description : Couronne de fleurs entourant une légende gravée en 3 lignes.
Commentary
La médaille fut décernée d’abord aux parents puis probablement à leur fille ensuite. Au revers figure le monogramme des époux : GJ et AG. Sur la tranche sont gravés les noms de leur fille et de son mari : Jeanne Jacob et Henry Urguet de St Ouen. Par ailleurs, vu le poinçon visible sur la tranche (lampe) et les fortes rayures au revers, il est possible que la médaille ait été utilisée plus tôt pour un troisième mariage (avant les deux figurant encore au revers et sur la tranche).
The medal was first awarded to the parents and then probably to their daughter. On the reverse is the monogram of the spouses: GJ and AG. On the edge are engraved the names of their daughter and her husband: Jeanne Jacob and Henry Urguet de St Ouen. Furthermore, given the hallmark visible on the edge (lamp) and the strong scratches on the reverse, it is possible that the medal was used earlier for a third marriage (before the two still appearing on the reverse and on the edge)

Historical background
LOVE AND MARRIAGE
It was customary in the past to give a treizain during the wedding mass. This treizain was blessed and signified entry into a community of property for the married couple. The treizain, which later became a medal or wedding token, was so called in honor of Jesus Christ and the twelve apostles. This practice continued until the first half of the 20th century. The reference work on the subject is the work of Jules Florange, Love and marriage in numismatics, Moulins, 1936 now replaced by that of Henri Térisse, La Numismatique du Mariage, Argenton-sur-Creuse 2008.
