Obverse legend : BÉNÉDICTION NUPTIALE.
Obverse description : Couple placé de part et d’autre d’un autel portant une flamme et décoré d’une guirlande, béni par un personnage voilé au centre au centre, derrière l’autel, sous une arcade. L’époux glisse un anneau au doigt de son épouse. Signé : L. BOTTE.

Reverse legend : LB.
Reverse description : Cinq anges volant au dessus d’un médaillon gravé, posé sur deux rameaux fleuris. Les anges tendent un voile et dispersent des fleurs.
Commentary
Médaille avec un monogramme au revers : LB différent des inscriptions de la tranche : A. Lam. F. Gasnier. Cette incohérence indique certainement que la médaille a été utilisée pour deux mariages.

Historical background
LOVE AND MARRIAGE
It was customary in the past to give a treizain during the wedding mass. This treizain was blessed and signified entry into a community of property for the married couple. The treizain, which later became a medal or wedding token, was so called in honor of Jesus Christ and the twelve apostles. This practice continued until the first half of the 20th century. The reference work on the subject is the work of Jules Florange, Love and marriage in numismatics, Moulins, 1936 now replaced by that of Henri Térisse, La Numismatique du Mariage, Argenton-sur-Creuse 2008.
