Ambiens (Region Amiens)

(Second - first century BC)

Their name, "those on both sides of the river," said the Ambiens, people of Gaul Belgium, occupied both banks of the Somme (Samara). Their territory is the current department of the Somme. They had for neighbors Calètes, the Morini, Atrebates, the Bellovaci. Their main oppidum was Samarobriva (near Amiens). They participated in the coalition Belgian peoples 57 BC and furnished a contingent of ten thousand men. In 52 BC, it is a contingent of five thousand men they gave the army emergency release dedicated to Alesia. Caesar (Bg. II, 4, 15, VII, 75, VIII, 7). Strabo (G. IV, 5). Kruta: 68, 110, 366.
