Commentary
Ce thaler commémore la convocation des princes allemands par l'empereur François-Joseph le 16 août 1863. Guillaume Ier, roi de Prusse, poussé par Bismarck, refusa d'y participer. L'empereur d'Autriche essayait de maintenir l'unité des provinces allemandes. Le Congrès fut un échec car il se réunissait en pleine crise danoise au moment de la mort de Frédéric VII le 15 novembre 1863 qui devait aboutir à la guerre des Duchés l'année suivante.
This thaler commemorates the convocation of the German princes by Emperor Franz Joseph on August 16, 1863. William I, King of Prussia, urged by Bismarck, refused to participate. The Emperor of Austria was trying to maintain the unity of the German provinces. The Congress was a failure because it met in the midst of the Danish crisis at the time of the death of Frederick VII on November 15, 1863, which was to lead to the War of the Duchies the following year.
