Commentary

Historical background

GERMANY - CITY OF LANDAU - CHARLES-ALEXANDRE DE WURTEMBERG

(1713)

Landau was occupied by the French at the beginning of the war with Holland in 1672. The city is located north of Wissembourg, currently in Germany. Louis of Baden came to lay siege to the city July 10, 1702 with Joseph of Austria and future Joseph I (1705-1711) and the city fell 10 September 1702 without being rescued. It will be resumed by Vauban in 1703, but lost again in 1704. In 1713, the city was held by the Duke of Wurttemberg, Charles Alexander, who will have to melt the dishes during the siege which begins June 22, 1713. The city fell to the French Marshal Bezons August 20, 1713.
