Il s’agit vraisemblablement d’une épreuve préparatoire pour le revers de la pièce de 40 Franken 1813, œuvre du graveur Pierre-Joseph Tiolier. Au revers, la légende est en creux et à l’envers, elle correspond à la légende complète de la 40 Franken. Deux traits en flèche ont été gravés postérieurement pour délimiter l’espace dédié au portrait de Jérôme Napoléon. Le différent de Tiolier, la tête d’aigle, est présent, poinçonné à coté du millésime. De l’autre côté apparaît une série de chiffres, sans signification particulière, servant simplement à tester les poinçons des différents chiffres utilisés pour les millésimes 1813, et ceux à venir. En définitive il n’y aura de frappe qu’en 1813 pour ce type. Les poinçons utilisés sont conformes à ceux utilisés pour la 40 Franken et d’une grande finesse, gage de l’authenticité de cette épreuve.
This is likely a preparatory proof for the reverse of the 40 Franken 1813 coin, the work of the engraver Pierre-Joseph Tiolier. On the reverse, the legend is intaglio and on the reverse, it corresponds to the complete legend of the 40 Franken. Two arrowhead lines were engraved later to delimit the space dedicated to the portrait of Jérôme Napoléon. Tiolier's distinctive mark, the eagle's head, is present, punched next to the year of issue. On the other side appears a series of numbers, without any particular meaning, simply serving to test the punches of the different numbers used for the 1813 years of issue, and those to come.
