Obverse description : Croix prussienne de Königgratz. Croix pattée convexe, ornée d'une couronne de feuilles de chêne entre les branches. Avers : Aigle couronné allemand debout sur un canon, avec les inscriptions .

Reverse description : Au centre, le chiffre royal prussien entouré de la légende. Les branches de la croix sont ornées d'une couronne en haut et de légende sur les autres branches.
Commentary
Décernée aux troupes prussiennes ayant combattu à la bataille de Königgratz le 3 juillet 1866, pendant la guerre austro-prussienne de 1866, lors d'un conflit avec le Danemark pour le contrôle du Schleswig-Holstein. Le ruban est identique à la médaille des combattants de la « Main Armee ». Cette médaille fait partie d'une collection constituée par feu Sir Thomas Hughes, membre du Conseil législatif de Nouvelle-Galles du Sud. Elle a été offerte au Mémorial en mémoire de son fils, le capitaine Roger Forrest Hughes, du Corps médical de l'armée australienne, décédé des suites de ses blessures en France le 11 décembre 1916, et de son petit-fils, le lieutenant d'aviation Peter Roger Forrest Hughes, du 12e escadron de la Royal Australian Air Force, tué en service actif alors qu'il volait dans le Territoire du Nord le 3 octobre 1942.

Guillaume I is the second son of Frédéric Guillaume III and the brother of Frédéric Guillaume IV. He has been regent for his brother since 1856 when he succeeded him in 1861. He marries Augusta of Saxe-Weimar from whom he has two children including Frederick III. With his minister Otto von Bismarck, he will achieve German unity. The Austro-Prussian War of 1866 with Sadowa's victory rid him of Austria and strengthen the North German Confederation. The war started against France in 1870 will bring him, by the Treaty of Frankfurt, Alsace and Lorraine on May 10, 1871. On January 28, 1871, he was crowned Emperor of Germany in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles.. The payment of the indemnity of 5 billion gold francs paid by France will enable it to succeed in its monetary reform, based on the gold standard. Bismarck remains Prime Minister of Prussia and imposes his views on foreign policy: isolation of France, alliance with Italy, Austria and Russia. The Berlin Congress allows Germany to pose as the arbiter of Europe and to constitute a colonial empire in Africa, Asia and Oceania. William I died in his nineties in 1888..
