Historical background

GERMANY - LÜBECK - HANSEATIC CITY OF LÜBECK

(Eighteenth century)

Lubeck obtained from Frederick II the right to mint coins in 1226. In 1241, it entered the Hansa. A convention was made with Hamburg in 1305 for the minting of pfennigs. New agreements were made with nearby towns for minting white pfennigs called "witten". The first Lubeck thaler was minted in 1528.
