Historical background
GERMANY - HILDESHEIM
Hildesheim is a town in Lower Saxony near Hanover. Seat of a bishopric in 815, Hidelsheim obtained city status in 1249 and became a member of the Hanseatic League in 1367. A leading city under the Ottonian dynasty, it lost its importance. Bombed during the Second World War, part of its medieval historic center has been restored.
