Louis III of Hesse (9/06/1806-13/06/1877) was the son of Louis II, whom he succeeded in 1848, from March 5 as regent then on June 16 as Grand Duke. He was married twice: with Mathilde of Bavaria in 1833, then morganatically in 1868 with Madeleine Appel. His nephew Louis IV became Grand Duke in 1877. Hesse-Darmstadt had an area of 7,670 km² in 1871 and a population of over 850,000..
