Historical background

GERMANY - BISHOPRIC OF CONSTANCE - HUGO VON HOHENLANDENBERG

(1496-1529 then 1531-1532)

Hugo von Hohenlandenberg (1447-1532) was elected bishop by the cathedral chapter of Constance in 1496. Initially open to certain ideas of the Reformation, he ended up opposing them but in 1526 he was forced to abandon the city to the hands of supporters of Martin Luther and Ulrich Zwingli and takes refuge in the castle of Meersburg. He resigned in 1526 but resumed his charge in 1531 following the death of his successor Balthasar Merklin.
