The Duchy of Anhalt was divided in 1603 between the sons of Joachim Ernst. After the death of Alexandre Charles in 1863, the duchy of Anhalt-Bernburg will pass to the duchy of Anhalt-Dessau. Alexandre Charles is the son of Duke Alexis Frédéric Christian and Frédérique de Hessen-Kassel. Married to Frédérique de Schleswig-Holstein, he reigned from 1834 until his death on August 19, 1863, which marked the extinction of the Anhalt-Bernburg branch..
