L’interdiction de la représentation de l’homme et des animaux valorise grandement l’écriture, d’autant plus que le Coran dit explicitement que l’art d’écrire est d’essence divine (sourate 96, verset 4). Les inscriptions ont donc à la fois une fonction de prosélytisme religieux et un rôle esthétique.

This is the fundamental period for the Al-Andalusian territory, the origin of the Muslim period in Iberian territory, so far dominated by the Visigoths. The Muslims created their capital in Cordoba and 21 governors succeeded each other until the territory became an independent emirate in 756, under the reign of Abd al-Rahman.
