Historical background

AKARNANIA - ARGOS AMPHILOCHIKON

(4th-3rd century BC)

Argos was founded by Amphilochos, an Argive. The city nicknamed Amphilochicum to distinguish it from Peloponnesian Argos was located at the bottom of the Gulf of Ambracia. The city had to face several attacks from Ambracia, its neighbour. The city was rescued several times by the Athenians, the last time in 426 BC, it was saved by general Demosthenes. Under the influence of Corinth in the 4th century, Argos like Ambracia belonged to the Acarnanian League. Around 270 BC, the city fell under the rule of the Aetolian League.
