Historical background

AGRIPPA

(63-12 BC)

Consecration of Caligula

Agrippa was born the same year as Octave, his childhood friend. He shows great military qualities, especially naval ones. It was he who won the battle of Nauloque in 36 BC, which put an end to the danger posed by Sextus Pompey. He is the great winner of the battle of Actium on September 2, 31 BC against the fleets of Antony and Cleopatra. When Augustus fell seriously ill in 23 BC, he gave his seal to his friend. In 21 BC, he made her marry Julie, his only daughter (39 BC - 14 AD). They have five children, three boys - Caius, Lucius and Agrippa - born after the death of his father (12 BC) and two girls - Julie and Agrippine. Auguste adopts the two eldest sons of Agrippa and Julie in order to make them his successors. Agrippa died on his return from a mission in Pannonia at the age of 51. Augustus, who survived him for more than a quarter of a century, then lost his best support.
