Historical background

AFGHANISTAN - GHAZNAVID DYNASTY

(Xth-XIIth)

The Ghaznavids are a Muslim dynasty, of Turkish origin, founded by Subuktigîn and who reigned from the end of the 10th century to the end of the 12th century over an empire made up of the regions of Khorasan, Ghaznî and Panjâb. The Ghaznavid Empire existed from 962 to 1187 led by a Mamluk dynasty of Turkish origin. It was a Sunni Muslim state that initially ruled Greater Khorasan (thus replacing the Samanids)1, centered on present-day Afghanistan. It was created by Alp Tigin with the city of Ghazna as its capital. After the Battle of Dandanakan in 1039, the Empire lost its eastern territories to the Seljuks and moved its capital to Lahore, thus ruling mainly in Punjab. (Wikipedia).
