Historical background

ACHAIA - ACHAEAN LEAGUE - ARGOS

(196-146 BC)

Argos would have been founded by Inachus, Phoroneus, his son, or Argos his grandson. The city was located at the bottom of the Gulf of Argolis. She appears in History around 750 BC with Phidion. It was the second city of the Peloponnese after Sparta. She was subjugated by it in 524 BC thanks to the victory of Cleomenes. Argos became Sparta's hereditary enemy and took the Persian side in the Persian Wars, then allied with Athens in the Peloponnesian War. It entered the Achaean League in 243 BC. After the Roman conquest, it was part of the province of Achaia.
