Commentary

Jeton non répertorié dans Feuardent. A replacer avec le F.4377. Buste très rare. En 1716, ce jeton a pu être entre les mains de Claude Gros de Boze. Celui-ci, né à Lyon le 28 janvier 1680, fut numismate et garde, en 1719, du Cabinet des antiques dont il classa la collection. Il fut reçu à l’Académie par André Dacier. Il mourut le 10 septembre 1753.
Cet exemplaire illustre le type dans le Guéant-Prieur.
Token not listed in Feuardent. To be replaced with F.4377. Very rare bust. In 1716, this token may have been in the hands of Claude Gros de Boze. Born in Lyon on January 28, 1680, he was a numismatist and, in 1719, keeper of the Cabinet of Antiques, whose collection he classified. He was received at the Academy by André Dacier. He died on September 10, 1753. This example illustrates the type in the Guéant-Prieur

Historical background

FRENCH ACADEMY / ACADÉMIE FRANÇAISE

The French Academy was founded in 1635, under the reign of Louis XIII, by Cardinal Richelieu, with the aim of embellishing and perfecting the French language, symbol of the power of the King and the State. It had to be "perfect, clear and precise, capable of marrying the twists and turns of thought, of supplanting Latin and of finishing off lexical and stylistic misuse." Monitoring the language, and therefore the writings, was also a means of thwarting political intrigues... The Academy receives as its seal the motto "to immortality" with a crown of laurels, and the care of writing the Dictionary of the language French. Reading advice: MASSON F., "History of the French Academy, 1629-1793", Paris, 1912.
