Commentary

Creation file for the 5000 F Djibouti note. Designed by the Bank of France's design department, this file contains all the engravings for the front and back. For the front, there are proofs of each color (yellow, red, light blue, dark blue) and one proof with all four colors. The same applies to the back. In total, there are 10 proofs on large-format paper. This is the first time we have offered a complete creation file; these files are extremely rare, given that before modern computers, having all the engravings separate would have greatly facilitated the work of potential forgers.

Historical background

DJIBOUTI

The opening of the Suez Canal gave the Gulf of Aden an unequaled strategic importance at the exit from the Red Sea. The English controlled Aden, the French bought Obock in 1862 while Marseille shipowners settled in Tadjoura. In 1884, a French protectorate was passed with the local potentates. The same was done with the Somali chiefs. Colonel Lagarde founded Djibouti in 1888. The capital was transferred in 1891 from Obock to Djibouti. Having colony status in 1894, the region took the name of Côte Française des Somalis in 1896.
