TATARSTAN
Tatarstan has been an autonomous republic within the USSR and then within the Russian Federation since 1920. At the time of the breakup of the USSR, the Supreme Soviet of the republic considered joining as a founding member of the CIS but ultimately remained within the Russian Federation.
