Historical background

FOURTH REPUBLIC

(16/01/1947-8/01/1959)

Characterized by a parliamentary system coupled with a large ministerial instability, the Fourth Republic has the distinction of never having been officially proclaimed. Indeed, De Gaulle, on his arrival in Paris August 25, 1944, refused to do so on the pretext that the Republic had never ceased to exist. Whereas the French State Marshal Petain was a simple situation, he believes that the Republic has survived in France and free his birth must be 18 June 1940. However, his departure, January 20, 1946 and the referendum of 13 October 1946 approving a new constitution, marked the official beginning of the republic. She knows two presidents: Vincent Auriol (01.16.1947 - 23.12.1953) and René Coty (12/23/1953 - 01/08/1959). Open crisis caused by the revolt of the army leads Algeria, in 1958, his fall is confirmed by the adoption of a new constitution September 28, 1958. However, it completely ceases to be that January 8, 1959 during the installation of General de Gaulle as President of the Fifth Republic.
