Commentary
Photo of the mock-ups for the front and back of a 5-pound banknote for Syria. In February 1938, the Bank of France commissioned L. Jonas to design a specific series of banknotes for Syria, which until then had shared its banknotes with Lebanon. For this series, the Bank of Syria requested an obverse featuring an Arabic-style design and a landscape for the reverse. This series was never issued and is known only through the archives of Lucien Jonas.
