Historical background

THIRD REPUBLIC - GOVERNMENT OF NATIONAL DEFENCE

(4/09/1870-13/02/1871)

The Republic was proclaimed on 4 September 1870 with the downfall of Napoleon III and his dynasty. Is set up a government of National Defence chaired by General Trochu, Governor of Paris and composed of moderate Republicans. The war continues and intensifies while the government is hiding in Paris besieged by the Prussians. A delegation withdrew to Tours. Gambetta joins balloon October 2, 1870. But this resistance remains vain and extends the misery, causing such commotion in October in Paris. In January 1871, the Government of National Defence must accept the terms of Bismarck. Paris capitulated, a National Assembly was elected to ratify the peace treaty, the armistice was signed. Elections were held on February 8 and brought to power a majority of conservative notables who meet for the first time in Bordeaux 13 February 1871. The Government of National Defence then gave him his powers.
