Pour le millésime 1808, il existe deux types de tranche : en relief ou en creux. La fabrication des espèces débuta par la tranche en relief dont la particularité était d'être frappée sur un fond ligné constitué de cinq filets horizontaux. Très vite, la tranche inscrite en creux remplaça la tranche inscrite en relief.
