Historical background

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

(Since 1844)

Santo Domingo is discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492 and named Hispaniola. She is the first Spanish province who call Santo Domingo. French and Spanish, the island is controlled by the United States in the early twentieth century. In 1962, the first free elections took place, but in 1963, a military coup overthrew the government. Order was restored in 1965 after U.S. intervention. Joaquin Balaguer was elected president in 1966, 1970 and 1974 and returned in 1986, 1990 and 1994. It faces many challenges: natural disasters (cyclones), inflation, corruption and social inequality, among other.
