Historical background



Between 1466 and 1793, Gdansk is a free city in the Polish Kingdom although the city has a population mostly German. Then, Danzig became the capital of West Prussia until 1920, with a brief interruption under Napoleon between 1807 and 1813. The subsequent Treaty of Versailles in the First World War because of Gdansk Free City of Danzig under the control of the League of Nations (1920). In September 1939, the Second World War begins with the shelling of Westerplatte fortress, and Danzig is linked to Germany.
