Historical background

ITALIA - PAPAL STATES - PAUL IV (Gian Pietro Carafa)

(23/05/1555-18/08/1559)

On May 23, 1555, then seventy-nine years old, Paul IV was elected pope and was consecrated on the following May 26. He deals with the reform of the Church and the Curia by partially eliminating nepotism and reducing expenses. In 1555, he condemned the doctrines of Faust and Lélie Sozzini, who denied the Trinity and the divinity of Jesus Christ. He died on August 18, 1559.
