Commentary

The Army Light Aviation (ALAT) is a component of the French Army. It historically originated from the artillery, of which it constituted the aviation resources in 1952 under the name of Light Aviation for Artillery Observation (ALOA). The ALAT became a separate arm from the artillery in 2003. This military light aviation mainly uses helicopters whose different roles are the reconnaissance of ground forces (tanks and infantry), target identification for artillery, combat against enemy scouts, combat (for example anti-tank), resupply, as well as the dropping off and recovery of soldiers in enemy zones. It is mainly used to support ground troops. It comprises approximately 70% of the helicopters in the French Army. (see Wikipedia)
