Historical background

SPAIN - EMPORION (AMPURIAS)

(3rd century BC)

The Greek Emporion, the Roman Ampurias, today San Martin de Ampurias was founded around 580 BC, perhaps by Rhodian colonists like Rosas (Rhodè) or Phocaeans like Marseilles whose foundations are contemporary. It was one of the most important ports in the Western Mediterranean. It is necessary to evoke rather two cities: Palaïapolis and Neapolis which were built. The city seems to have developed rapidly thanks to its port which was to become one of the most important in the western Mediterranean..
