Obverse description : Héphaïstos nu assis à droite sur siège, tenant un marteau de la main droite et un canthare de la main gauche ; grènetis circulaire perlé.

Reverse description : Neuf lettres grecques en plein champ ; au centre six globules posés en rond ; grènetis circulaire perlé.

Reverse legend : LIPARAION.

Commentary

Série légère. Pour cette série, G. Buceti a recensé seulement trois exemplaires tous légers dont les poids sont compris entre 3,85 g et 4,78 g qui semblent correspondre à une nouvelle réduction pondérale par rapport à notre exemplaire. Sur notre exemplaire, les globules sont bien disposés ciruculairement autour de la légende et pas comme sur un dé. De la même manière les exemplaires recensés par O. Hoover (HGCS. 2/ 1769) pèsent entre 5,69 g et 6 g et des diamètres compris entre 19 et 21 millimètres. Notre exemplaire semble bien appartenir à une série différente, plus lourde, non distinguée dans les ouvrages de référence.

SICILY - SICILIAN ISLANDS - LIPARI

(4th - 3rd century BC)

Lipari is part of a series of seven islands of volcanic origin off Sicily 40 kilometers away which includes among others Stromboli. Identified with Aeolus, god of the winds, it is one of the Aeolian Islands. A legend has it that its islands are the lair of EphaIstos (Vulcan) god of the underworld. It would also have been the place where the Cyclops lived. Colonized by the Greeks during the 5th century BC to protect Sicily from Carthaginian invasions. Lipari was finally captured by the Carthaginians in 288 BC. The Romans seized it during the First Punic War in 251 BC. The islands remained disputed until the end of the Second Punic War (218 -201 BC). The island enjoyed some prosperity under Augustus.
