Commentary

Historical background

PREMIER EMPIRE / FIRST FRENCH EMPIRE

(December 2, 1804)

Jean-Pierre Droz was appointed General Administrator of the Coins and Medals of France in 1802 and, two years later, he became curator of the Monetary Museum until 1814. On the medals of Napoleon I we find the name of Dominique Vivant Denon (1747 -1825) who had participated in the Expedition to Egypt and became in 1804 Director of Museums and the coin, a position he held until 1815.
