Obverse description : Buste radié, drapé et cuirassé de Pacatien à droite, vu de trois quarts en arrière (A2).

Reverse legend : PAX - A-ETERNA.

Reverse description : Pax (la Paix) drapée debout à gauche tenant une branche d’olivier de la main droite et un sceptre transversal de la main gauche.

Commentary

Exemplaire de mêmes coins que l’exemplaire de la vente Lanz 159, n° 547. Rubans de type 3. Cuirasse à peine visible sous le paludamentum. Sur cet exemplaire, les traces de surfrappe sont peu visibles en raison de l’état de conservation de l’exemplaire.

Pacatian was at the head of the Danubian legions at the end of the year 348 or the beginning of the year 349 when he was proclaimed august by his troops, in revolt against the authority of Philip the Arab. This revolt occurred about the same time as that against Jotapien in the East. Philippe sent his general Decius to fight the sedition. The mutinous legions eliminated Pacatian and joined Decius who initially refused the purple before finally accepting it and marching against Philip and his son. The final meeting took place near Verona in September 249.
