Historical background

NERO and AGRIPPINA

(+59)

Agrippina (15-59) is the daughter of Germanicus and Agrippina the Elder, sister of Caligula. She married Domitius Ahenobarbus and gave birth to Nero in 37. After marrying her uncle in 50, she succeeded in having her son adopted by her husband, who became Caesar. All that remains for Agrippina, to ensure power for her offspring, is to get rid of the husband who has become a nuisance. Claude is poisoned, Britannicus dismissed and Nero succeeds Claude. Agrippina is then closely associated with power. This presence having become too pressing, Nero finally agreed to kill his mother in 59.
